Structural Consolidation

At ENESA CONTINENTAL, we offer this service with the aim of technically defining the state of the structural wood of a building.

The biotic degradation damage found in wooden structures is usually caused by xylophagous organisms (termites, woodworm and rot fungi). This service allows us to know the structural quality of the wood in a non-destructive way. Depending on the data obtained, we can determine an action plan to remedy the problem, determine whether the problem is still active, the causes, the exact extent of the deterioration, affected areas, etc.

The techniques used in this service are non-destructive, we use state-of-the-art equipment: Termatrac, Audiotermes, Hygrometer, Resistograph, etc. This equipment detects the presence of xylophagous insects by the emission of sounds produced by the xylophagous insects during their activity. In the case of resistography, it is a technique to determine the internal degradation that the different elements tested can suffer. It is based on the measurement of the resistance to perforation, using a 1.5 mm diameter drilling needle that penetrates the wood with a regular advance, thus measuring the resistance to perforation. The measurement curves obtained are unambiguous in the tested and damaged elements: termite decay, woodworm decay, cerambycid decay, compressed wood, rot in various stages of development, cracks and other defects are clearly differentiated.

The service ends with the issuing of a technical report, identifying the pathologies detected, the need for repairs, reinforcements, curative and preventive treatments against xylophagous organisms and any other information of interest to the client.

This service is highly beneficial for the client, as it allows us to accurately determine on site the exact needs of the tested structure in terms of replacement, reinforcements and treatments of the different wooden elements. This avoids unnecessary treatments, elimination or substitutions, which are normally costly.

Treatment against xylophagous insects

The services we offer are based on fully defined, written action protocols, designed to meet the needs and requirements of our clients.

In order to choose the most effective treatment for the elimination of termites, woodworm and other pests such as fungi, we will first carry out a diagnosis of the situation, compiling the most important data: identification of the destructive agent, extent of the infestation, characteristics of the affected wood, building environment, accessibility for the execution of the treatment, possible causes of the origin, etc. Depending on the diagnosis of the situation, we will determine the most advantageous technique or set of techniques to carry out the most optimal treatment.

At ENESA CONTINENTAL, we offer different wood treatment services in Valencia for the control of xylophagous insects, using a wide range of techniques and solutions that are totally respectful of the environment and comply with all occupational risk prevention regulations.

Our main objective is defined in obtaining an optimum result with the minimum intervention, the least possible use of biocides and economic savings for our clients.

Injection, this technique is totally viable for the control of all types of xylophages, but depending on the target species (termites, woodworm, fungi) we will proceed in a different way. Depending on the target species and the areas to be treated, we will choose the type of injection and the magnitude of the injection. I feel it is a curative and preventive treatment.

The injection mainly consists of perforating either the wood itself, walls or perimeters of the constructions. Depending on the area to be treated, we introduce valves with a non-return device, which have to be of different diameters and with a separation between valves, depending on the treated area and the species to be treated.

Microinjection, this technique is used in areas where, due to the section of the wood itself, injection with valves is not viable or due to the characteristics of the treated pieces (works of art, altarpieces, carriages, etc.). This type of treatment is both curative and preventive, leaving a residual on the treated pieces to prevent future xylophagous infestations.

Microinjection mainly consists of perforating the wood with special drills with a diameter of no more than 2mm, choosing the least visible areas of the piece to be treated and making the perforations with drills of different lengths. Once the treatment areas have been identified and the perforations have been made, we introduce the biocide inside the wood with special needles and then proceed to fill all the perforations.

Brushing, is a technique used on all wood surfaces, we only have to take into account that the wood has an open pore, this means that it does not have a varnish, enamel, lacquer, etc. coating. It is a curative and preventive treatment.

Brushing mainly consists of applying a biocide gel with brushes and rollers. The biocide gel used has a high penetration power inside the wood, being able to reach up to 6 centimetres of penetration (depending on the density of the treated wood).

Controlled pressure spraying is a technique used in conjunction with the injection of the wood, its main objective being the elimination of common woodworm. It is a curative and preventive treatment.

Controlled pressure spraying mainly consists of the application of a biocide with specific equipment. Its objective being the elimination and protection of the wood against the larvae of the common woodworm, this xylophagous insect generally only attacks the sapwood of the wood, (external and softer areas).

Elimination of termite colonies

At ENESA CONTINENTAL, we offer the service of eliminating termite colonies through the installation and maintenance of baits.

The bait system is a complete system based on an alternative method of biological control against termites, based on food baits and with which the eradication of the colony is achieved. The complete system consists of ground bait holders, wall bait holders, wooden bait cores and baits.

Both the wall bait and the floor bait consist of a special formulation based on a cellulose support, whose extraordinary appetence and attraction for termites has been demonstrated in studies carried out by independent, approved laboratories specifically dedicated to wood and its protection. This cellulosic carrier is uniformly impregnated with the active ingredient.

The active material acts by inhibiting the synthesis of chitin, and is transmitted from one termite to another by means of a particular behaviour of the termites which is trophallaxis, i.e. the altruistic donation of food that they make to each other, they regurgitate the food and another one feeds on this food. In this way, our delayed-acting active material is passed from one to the other, acting against the whole colony.

The need for monitoring and control is fundamental and is established in 3 phases:

  1. Elimination: When the termite has a higher consumption of the product, and a higher mortality rate is observed. 1st year, monthly visits (12 visits per year).
  2. Control: In this phase we ensure the disappearance of activity in the predetermined areas and the appearance of new points of activity. 2nd year, (6 visits per year)
  3. Maintenance: Inspection phase. Review of baits only. 3rd and 4th year (4 visits per year)

The total duration of these 3 phases is 4 years. The first one is approx. 12 to 18 months, the other two are 3 years later. It is important to start treatment in the seasonal period when the termite is most active. That is to say, in periods after rainfall and with a temperature of 13-25 ºC. During this first phase, the frequency of controls will be established to coincide with the periods of greatest activity, until the 12-18 month cycle is completed. In the second phase (2nd year), a control monitoring will be carried out and the baits eaten will be replaced. The frequency will vary according to the virulence of the attack. For successive years (3rd and 4th), different maintenance periods will be established, spring/autumn, coinciding with the months of greatest termite activity.

At ENESA CONTINENTAL, we are experts in the treatment of wood and for this we have the corresponding registration and authorisations, as well as continuous training of our technicians and a personalised updating of our protocols to the specific situation of each job carried out.

The products used by ENESA CONTINENTAL for this type of treatment are of the latest generation, offering high control power over the target species and have a combined biocide and fungicide effect, do not alter the colour of the wood and act against the degradation caused by the sun.

Cleaning and surface preparation

At ENESA CONTINENTAL, we offer a cleaning and preparation service for wooden surfaces.
Before carrying out surface preparation, we meticulously assess a series of factors in order to select the most suitable method, these factors are safety, accessibility, environmental protection, environmental care, costs, etc.
Manual cleaning, this method does not use power tools to remove paint, varnish, dirt and degradation. This method is normally used to clean parts of a certain value and in places where it is difficult to work with any type of power tool.
Mechanical cleaning, in this method we use electric and pneumatic tools to remove paint, varnish, dirt and degradation. This method is used in large areas with good accessibility, being necessary in certain areas to finish off with manual methods.
Sand blasting (aluminium silicate), with this method we achieve a total cleaning, the process consists of launching at high speed, driven by pressurised air, different types and sizes of grains of sand, achieving a totally uniform cleaning of the treated areas. The material is projected against the surfaces to remove paint, varnish, dirt and degradation.
Chemical cleaning, this method consists of the application of chemical products (paint strippers). This type of product reacts chemically and eliminates the different layers of paint, varnish and dirt, but at no time can it eliminate any degradation in the areas applied.

Fireproof Varnish

At ENESA CONTINENTAL, we offer a wood fireproofing service.

The application of a fireproof varnish offers a finish identical to the application of any other type of varnish, but it is its specific manufacturing characteristics (resins that do not burn) that provide the surfaces where they have been applied with greater resistance to fire and slow down its propagation.

The use of flame retardant varnishes has become widespread in recent times as a fire prevention and protection measure, offering passive protection against any fire. They also offer very effective properties against the deterioration caused by the passage of time or the action of other external agents.

Fireproofing with this type of varnish is regulated by current regulations and is established in the Technical Building Code, which regulates the different levels of fire protection in buildings.

Structural wood consolidation

At ENESA CONTINENTAL, we offer solutions to consolidate, reinforce and restore structural wood.
Valencia wood treatment solutions.

Solutions using epoxy formulations is a solution that consists of the installation of reinforcement bars as reinforcement in incisions made in the surface of the piece, which can be on the sides, top or bottom.

The system is described in the following steps:

  • Cutting of the piece to be worked on.
  • Elimination of all the wood that does not have resistance, cleaning it up until healthy wood is found.
  • Drilling holes as parallel as possible to the wood grain of the beam.
  • Insertion of pre-stressed fibreglass rods in the area of the cleaned wood. This rod, which is highly resistant to flexo-tensile stress and has an elasticity very similar to that of the wood, is the connecting element between the epoxy resin mortar and the sound wood.
  • Making a formwork, well adjusted, in the healthy part of the wood.
  • Pouring the epoxy resin mortar into the formwork.
  • Pouring liquid resin into the holes where the fibreglass rod is located, in the healthy wood area. Due to the low viscosity of the liquid resin, it will fill any cracks or crevices inside the beam.
  • After 24-48 hours, depending on the outside temperature, once it has hardened, the finishing, stripping and sanding of the repaired parts can be carried out.
  • Elimination of props.
